Russell Baptist, LCSW, is the President and Founder of The A. and S. Consulting Services, a private practice specializing in psychotherapy, court evaluations, supervision/coaching, and providing technical assistance for diversity, equity, and inclusion evaluations to organizations. Professor Baptist serves as a senior lecturer at the Columbia University School of Social Work. As one of New York State’s first cohort of Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), he previously held the position of Managing Director of Programs at the Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS), where he was instrumental in pioneering services for special needs populations in supportive housing. In this capacity, he supervised, managed, and developed social workers, psychiatrists, and mental health para-professional staff to implement diversity, equity, inclusion initiatives, and Evidence-Based Practices.
Through sponsorship from the Robin Hood Foundation, he directed the creation of an anti-poverty program for the Harlem/Washington Heights communities called Single Stop, USA. He was also the founding director of the George Brager Scholarship Program for college-bound students living in supportive housing, named in honor of a former dean of CSSW. Mr. Baptist has extensive experience in developing budgets, grant reporting/writing, and training social service staff across New York City, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C., with a focus on working with People of Color, LGBTQ diversity, Culture & Ethnicity, Social Work Supervision, Mental Health, Homelessness, and Supportive Housing.
He managed contracts with federal entities such as SAMHSA, HUD, and the Veterans Administration, as well as New York City and State departments of Mental Health (DOHMH & OMH) and Homeless Services (DHS & HRA). Additionally, he provided psychotherapy for youth in foster care. Professor Baptist has lectured at Stony Brook University in New York City, served as a consultant, and appeared on various local radio programs and television shows including Good Day New York, Albany Update, Mark Walberg, Charles Perez, Ricki Lake, and The Queen Latifah shows. He has served on the Board of Directors for Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) and The Association for Retired Citizens (ARC) XII and as the former Board Chair of Unity Fellowship Church NYC. He is also a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).
Mr. Baptist holds a BA degree from Texas College and an MS degree in Social Work Practice from Columbia University. He is a "JFK Jr. Fellow/Mentor" and has furthered his education at Yeshiva University, the University of Washington, DC, and Long Island University. His notable published work includes the book “Adam and Steve: The Rules for Men Attracted to Other Men” (2015, revised 2016).
